Tibet Nepal Overland Border Closed

The international border crossing between Tibet and Nepal remains closed, but will hopefully open later in 2016.

On 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal and parts of Tibet that lie along the border with Nepal. The quake killed over 9000 and caused widespread destruction. The earthquake caused heavy damage along the border areas of Nepal and Tibet, particularly around the international border crossing at the towns of Kodari, Nepal and Zhangmu, Tibet. This international border crossing has been closed since the day of the earthquake.

While both Nepal and Tibet are SAFE for travel, the international border crossing remains closed. This means that the only way to currently travel from Tibet to Nepal (or vice versa) is to fly from Lhasa to Kathmandu. Hopefully this international border crossing will reopen in Spring 2016, but it remains impossible to say exactly when it will reopen. Once it does reopen, we will immediately update this post.
